The proficiency levels in German language courses

German A1

A1 – As a beginner, you can understand and use familiar, everyday expressions and very simple sentences aimed at satisfying concrete needs. You can introduce yourself and others and ask people questions about themselves – e.g., where they live, what people they know, or what things they have – and you can answer questions of this kind. German B1

B1 – Intermediate users can understand the main points when clear standard language is used and when it concerns familiar topics from work, school, leisure, etc. They can handle most situations encountered while traveling in a German-speaking area and can express themselves simply and coherently about familiar topics and personal interests. They can also report on experiences and events, describe dreams, hopes, and goals, and give brief reasons or explanations for plans and views. Exams: ÖSD Certificate B1, ÖIF Certificate B1, German Test for Austria (DTÖ).

German B2

B2 – You can understand the main content of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, and you can also understand technical discussions in your area of expertise. You can communicate spontaneously and fluently, so that a normal conversation with native speakers is easily possible without significant effort on either side. Furthermore, you can express yourself clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics, explain your viewpoint on a current issue, and state the advantages and disadvantages of different options. Exams: ÖSD Certificate Intermediate B2, ÖIF Certificate B2.

German C1

C1 – You can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and also grasp implicit meanings. You can express yourself spontaneously and fluently, without frequently having to search for words. Moreover, you can use the language effectively and flexibly in social and professional life, or in education and studies. Furthermore, you can express yourself clearly, structured, and in detail on complex issues, using various means of text connection appropriately. Exam: ÖSD Certificate Advanced C1.

German C2

C2 – You can effortlessly understand almost everything you read or hear. You can summarize information from various written and spoken sources, providing reasons and explanations in a coherent presentation. Additionally, you can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently, and accurately, and even with more complex matters, you can clearly convey subtle nuances of meaning. Exam: ÖSD Business Language C2.
